A place to rest in a bustling city is a quest that has always interested me. Reading this, I remembered a New York Times article from long ago that has always stuck with me: "Please, just a nice place to sit," Dec. 3, 1972, by William H. And as a lifelong New Yorker, I learned all kinds of things from this post: that our bus shelters and newsstands are provided by an advertising company and that there's such a things as grassroots street furniture. Thanks for another great essay.

I remember the older park benches in NYC with concrete supports that caused many a banged knee for kids who used it as an extension of the playground...
